Interfaith September Get-Together: Casey Multi-Faith Network
On Thursday 3 September, the Casey Multi-Faith Network held the Annual General meeting which incorporated the theme of Interfaith September, an initiative of the Uniting Church in Australia.
The Annual General Meeting, conducted by City of Casey Councillor Damien Rosario, who announced the new executive committee and thanked the retiring members. He highlighted the achievements of the network and congratulated the group for promoting peace and harmony through interfaith dialogue.
The new executive committee elected for the year 2015-2015 is:
- Stephanie Saunders, President
- Jim Reiher, Vice President
- Pam Mamouney OAM, vTreasurer
- Naureen Choudhry, Secretary and Public Officer
- Gamini Fonseka
- Andrew Williams
- Sohail Yamin
- Judy Owen JP
Following the AGM, the network invited members to join in with the guests from Uniting Church to watch a movie "Mary meets Muhammad", a documentary feature film showing the arrival of Tasmania’s first detention centre through the eyes of local Christian woman and knitting club member Mary and Muslim Afghan Hazara asylum seeker Mohammad, who is detained inside the centre – as they connect through the gift of a knitted beanie.
The movie became a launch-pad to discuss the current Syrian refugee crisis and gave way to an emotional and passionate conversation. Members of the Uniting Church had prepared questions that prompted a meaningful discussion. Special Guest Chip Henriss interviewed several members and guests and captured their feelings and response to the movie on camera.
The meeting between the regular attendees of the Mutli-Faith network with guests from Uniting Curch was a great way to participate in this very special outreach program organised by the Uniting Church. It was the perfect get-together for the annual general meeting.
